I have my iprep all setup with 1.6 firmware and ready to go but I needed to know one thing before I poceed. Do I need to flash the original firmware back to the drive first or can I just flash it with the 1.4 firmware thats already on there?

Ya man I keep a backup of all the firmwares of every box I've done just to be safe.

I went ahead and tried flash it. I did the dsam command and it would get to the end and say aborting because there is no SamOFW. It did make a SamCFW file with all 7's as the serial. I used toolbox to import the correct key and to spoof it as an Hitachi 0059 then flashed it with iprep. I should be good right?

what drive you doing? hitachi? if so be careful as they can brick, stick to the basics with them and don't take risks

3rd thing to do is make sure you have a compatible SATA chipset, do that here
