Old 80GB BLu-ray in a new 80GB

Any chance that this will let me play PS2 games?
The old 80GB is busted, Sony is no longer repairing them and I'm tired of switching out consoles everytime I want to play RE4 or GT4.

Any ideas as to what to do?

no, the new 80gb is very different, it's even a fair bit different than the 40gb which it was based on [they have different sized upper shells, different power, hdmi, optical input arrangement and more]

then also the old 80gb has 4 usb ports etc, just find somewhere to repair it, are you sure sony won't? i know they won't replace them anymore nbut i'm sure they would have to repair

The warranty is voided on it, and the reason why it's busted in the first place isn't covered by warranty.

That and a friend gave it to me, so I don't have the receipt or anything.

Patent reveals PS2 emulation via PS3\'s cell processor

A new patent has surfaced which shows a way of directly emulating the PS2 via the use of the PS3's cell processor! Hopefully this means that backwards compatibility will become available for all PS3 owners.

The patent describes a means of directly emulating the PS2’s Emotion Engine chipset using the PS3’s Cell Processor. Those with a keen memory for PS3 hardware models will recall that when the console first launched in the US, the original 60GB came with full PS2 backwards compatibility via an Emotion Engine chip.

In the UK we weren’t blessed with the same hardware backwards compatibility support, but in those early days there was a software solution that at least makes most games run to some degree. More recent PS3 models, including the 40GB and 80GB versions, have dropped backwards compatibility altogether, after the Graphics Synthesizer was removed to lower production costs.
